Day use permits in 2026: what to know before you drive

What “advance daily vehicle permit” actually means

• You can reserve a daily vehicle permit up to five days ahead at many operating parks.
• It guarantees entry for one passenger vehicle and its passengers (up to 14 people, depending on the vehicle’s capacity rules).
• Some parks offer time slots (like 2-hour or 4-hour blocks) as well as full-day permits.

The no-show reality (use-it-or-lose-it)

Day-use permits are basically plan-only money:

• No date/location changes
• Non-transferable
• If you don’t go, you generally don’t get that money back

2) The “anti-gaming” penalties (10%–50%) when you shorten a booking

A lot of people try this move:

book 10–14 nights to grab a prime weekend… then later shorten the stay to “keep the weekend”

Ontario Parks treats that as “shortening,” and it can trigger a percentage penalty — not just a small flat fee.

If you cancel or shorten before noon (12:00 p.m. ET) on your arrival date, the penalty can be 10% to 50% of the value of the cancelled nights, depending on how long you held the reservation.

If you cancel after noon on arrival day, it can be a 1-night penalty + the percentage penalty.

How the percentage penalty works (simple version):

• Held 1 month or less → 10%
• Held over 1 up to 2 months → 20%
• Held over 2 up to 3 months → 30%
• Held over 3 up to 4 months → 40%
• Held over 4 months → 50%

There’s also a minimum cancellation/shortening fee, and the exact minimum depends on whether you do it online or by phone.

Let’s say you booked a longer stay and the cancelled nights you’re removing are worth $200 (campsite fees portion).
